The overcurrent devices used in electrical networks, are divided into two main categories based on the working voltage:

  • Low voltage and
  • Medium voltage

Low Voltage overcurrent devices (U<1000V)

  • DIN Fuses (DIAZED, NEOZED, NH)
  • BS 7871 Fuses
  • Miniature cicuit breakers
  • Molded case circuit-breakers equipped with thermomagnetic protection unit
  • Molded case circuit-breakers equipped with electronic protection unit
  • Manual motor starters
  • Motor overload relays (thermal or electronic)

Medium voltage overcurrent devices (U>1000V)

  • Fuses
  • Overcurrent relays

Each overcurrent protection device is characterized by one or more of the below curves:

  • Tripping curve
  • Let-through energy curve
  • Let-through current curve
